Cover Letter

The cover letter is the document that you write to provide information that you would not put in the resume or CV for reasons of confidentiality or directing the documents to the correct person. You would normally state the following in your covering letter:

  • why you are attracted to the job advertised
  • your present position
  • what your present remuneration package comprises
  • how that company should contact you
  • how the company should approach your references
  • when you would be available to start if your application is successful

The cover letter is extremely important as it provides to the prospective employer with the very first impression of the candidate. There should be absolutely no mistakes in the cover letter in respect of spelling and the names and titles of addresses of the persons or companies involved

The sample letters below will give you an idea as to the wording and structuring of the covering letter. It should be addressed like a normal business letter:
